Miss Headland 1938-1939 – Elizabeth Johnson is our very 1st Miss Headland. She was crowned 80 Years ago, a pretty young woman that started it all and a tradition was born, although after Elizabeth was crowned World War II came about and the pageant was not held from 1939 until 1947. That same year Dothan held its first National Peanut Festival and our very own Miss Headland was also crowned the first Miss National Peanut Festival Queen. The middle photo is the night she was crowned and there was also a King who was sitting beside her in the photo. The bottom middle photo is also after she was Miss National Peanut, a wonderful photo of her waist deep in peanuts in a swimsuit. An old clipping from 1938 stated that one judge chose her because of her vivacious smile which can clearly be seen in the photo on the right. What a nice legacy that is for Headland and since then we have only had one other win that title and a few that came close with 1st and 2nd runner up.
Trivia: Her daughter, Joan Brogden, was crowned Little Miss Headland 1963-64 and her niece, Dethalia Johnson was Miss Headland 1959-60.
